Tom's Bag

I'm doing a shoulder bag for my friend Tom that I went to PSU with. We were both in the math department which explains the equations. (click on the picture to see a bigger version.)



The image on the front is Aleph 0 which is a hebrew symbol and is the first cardinal number in mathematics. Which means it's the smallest infinite set. Because yes there are different sets of infinity and some are bigger than others.

I love how he's come up with his own spec sheet language of f(x) = large enough to fit an object of x inches. It's similar to when the designer gives the patternmaker their fit model's measurements and then the patternmaker knows how much ease to add to the garment to insure the right fit.
...But how thick is that object? Don't you need another variable or measurement?

I think F(x) is a three dimentional function. it takes in to account the three dimentional nature of the objects in the pockets.
I thought there was a little lack of info on this spec sheet as well so we also came up with my version of a spec sheet which is a list of names like "Big pocket" and a list of numbers like 3.5x1.5x7.
Anyway we worked it all out and I got the bag done last night so I'll be posting pictures of it soon.

Big Pocket =3 1/2x1 1/2x7" is much more the type of spec sheet i do as well -- i did like the idea of using that algebraic language that i remember being convinced was necessary in 8th grade when i watched a video in class about how designers need math - they showed a very glamorous runway shot....
